Christmas Jubilee Announcement from Bishop LibasciDecember 3, 2024 Dear Brothers in Christ: The Winter fast, as the Season of Advent might be called, is demonstrated visibly by violet vestments and adornments, removal of flowers from the altar and, if there are any decorations, they are subdued. The Advent Wreath is present as a reminder of the course of time and the approach of the Just Judge whose Second Coming will herald the beginning of a new heaven and a new earth; where the glory of the Lord will surround His Faithful with unblemished love, justice, and peace- fulfilling the Beatific Vision: looking upon the very Face of God without fear and rapt in ultimate happiness. The Winter fast of Advent is lesser than the strict fast of Lent, but the intent is the same: “Prepare the Way of The Lord!” At Easter, the joy of Resurrection is the cause of our celebration and at Christmas, the joy of the Divine Presence in our midst is at the heart of our joy and feasting. It seems to make sense that the Holy Father has recognized our earthly life as a pilgrimage of hope. This has always been the case, of course, but just as the Liturgical Cycle is repeated each year to challenge materialism and relativism by faith and self-gift, the theme of hope encourages us to challenge feelings of the anguish of discouragement by recalling Christ’s promises kept and His promise yet to come. In the Old Testament, the Holy and just Job professed, “I believe that my redeemer lives, and on the last day I shall rise from the dust and in my flesh I shall see my God and Savior. My very self shall see Him; my own eyes shall gaze on Him.” At Christmas we see the Lord in flesh. He lives in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is born of her and lives as an infant lying in a manger. His very self sees us; His own eyes gaze on us. As an infant is captivated by the presence of others, so is Christ Jesus drawn to love; rejoice in what He sees in human beings as children of God – His own family to whom He is entrusted on earth! In the New Testament, the Book of Revelation presents the vision of the glory of heaven and the presence of all who have endured their earthly trials and faithfully, relying on the promise of Jesus, they are seen by St. John as friends united and completely transformed. He records the words we all know: “I am the Alpha and the Omega; the beginning and the end.” He is the complete and only Savior, “from A to Z” with no promise unfulfilled, no need unmet that will bring us to that joy if only, relying on the promise of Jesus, we remember that hope does not disappoint those who follow the Good Shepherd across the highest hills and through the darkest valleys. He is there with His crook and His staff; beside restful waters He leads us. And so, through the Holy Seasons of Advent and Christmas we are reminded, as faithful believers worthy of salvation that right now we are, together, on a Pilgrimage of Hope. On Saturday, December 24, Christmas Eve, Pope Francis will inaugurate a Holy Year of Jubilee and re-open the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica announcing that this Holy Year of Jubilee is to be known and recognized as A PILGRIMAGE of HOPE. On Saturday, December 28, the Eve of the Sunday of the Holy Family, our cathedral and those around the world will solemnly proclaim the Holy Year in every locality. In my next letter we will send more information and include tangible signs of hope that are being realized throughout our state as we have promised to proclaim the Good news that is our hope in Jesus Christ.
